Will Buchanan is the sole producer for the independent label; Breakwood Records. He has been working with artists, such as rapper Jordan 212 and rock band PopCulturePirates helping them develop their latest projects. Born in New York but now based in Toronto, Buchanan is an underground talent and one to watch.
He has been moving forward on his own solo mission and is surprisingly under-discovered, albeit for his one and only solo release “Shoulder Blades” which is the first track to be shared from his upcoming EP, and it’s seriously good.
Immediately captivating from the start, with enigmatic guitar riffs, vibrant and melodically perfected with a soul-shaking baseline, he emits a certain aura and electricity through his music. He uses clever, subtle progressions teasing up and adding more dynamic but ultimately taking it back to its powerful groove, which is the core and essence of the track.
He has a distinctive, soulful sound of his own but categorically we can call it alternative/indie. It has similar vibes to the Majestic Casual channel going on here with the way he tweaks his riffs and creates a rich and dreamy wonderland for us to feast on. His sound is also certainly comparable in part to James Blake as well as to Two Feet in it’s deep and moving hooks, although far less heavy and more of a mellow, dreamy zone. This dream-like feel is furthered with distorted and altogether limited vocals. The track doesn’t develop or move around much but it doesn’t need to, it is more emotive, conveying a feeling that you connect with, a place for you to get lost in.
For the end of the track, it breaks down and fades behind a sample from an old movie of a French man’s voice talking and birds tweeting in the background. There’s a real stroke of genius in the production of this tune and we are left wanting. He is currently working on finishing his first album and we can only wait eagerly.
