An official government petition has started to circulate via various social media channels amongst the British public, calling for the UK’s government to follow other countries in legalizing marijuana for medical and recreational use.
Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalize the drug earlier this year and citizens of the United States can now legally purchase medical marijuana in over 15 states.
The drug has also been broadly made available for recreational use in the US, however, it is still against federal law. Several countries around the world have also adopted a more relaxed attitude towards the substance.
Cannabis & Cannabinoids are currently a Class B drug in the United Kingdom along with substances such as Amphetamines, Mephedrone and the highly popular drug, ketamine. These could all land you up to 5 years in prison for possession, and up to 14 years for supply and production.
How does the petition work?
The petition started by, Joseph Charles Davis states - “It is time for the government to accept that cannabis should be legal.
Prohibition has done nothing to reduce drug use and it is hypocritical for the government to allow alcohol and tobacco”
At the time of writing this article, the petition so far stands at 4,957 signatures.
